The school was established on 16 June 2003, on the Sekolah Alam Shah site, which the latter left for a new site in Putrajaya.[1] Throughout its establishment years, ASiS has put itself as an institution par excellence, nurturing students to be world class leaders, by achievement in both academics and co-curriculum. This is pursuant to the school slogan, "Menzahirkan Pemimpin Bertaraf Dunia" (Moulding World Class Leaders).

History

The history of ASiS dated back long before its existence. As an outcome of Razak Report, Sekolah Alam Shah (SAS) was established on February 7, 1963 [2]. However, just several months after its 40th anniversary celebration and amid opposition from some students, staff and alumni, SAS was relocated to a new modern school complex in Putrajaya. The Education Ministry then did not take long to make use of the still largely operational old premises. On June 16, 2003 a new school came into being whilst still carrying the name of the fifth Selangor Ruler, the Alam Shah Science School.

ASiS campus is located in the outskirts of metropolitan Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Despite that, the atmosphere is really natural with many old trees left untouched, including fruit trees like rambutans and durians. This contributes to the leafy areas around the school, besides giving students a chance to handpick fresh fruits during their season. The location is also conducive as an education hub. The school site covers a 34-hectare land, comprising 3 administration and class buildings, 4 hostel blocks, 1 dining hall, 1 teachers' apartment, 1 staff's apartment, 6 teachers' quarters and a principal's bungalow. Facilities available include tennis, futsal and basketball courts, and a football/rugby field shared with Institut Perguruan Ilmu Khas. ASiS is surrounded by a few education institutions, which are the Sekolah Menengah Teknik Kuala Lumpur, Sekolah Menengah Sains Selangor, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Cheras, Institut Perguruan Ilmu Khas, Institut Perguruan Teknik and is near to the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM).[3] Also in the vicinity of the school is the KL Football Stadium that is the venue of ASiS' Annual Athletics Day.

Student selection is based on the achievement in the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) nationwide, with co-curricular factors also being put into consideration. The selection process is made by the Ministry of Education, as per all Malaysian public boarding schools (SBP). The first batch of students, calling themselves PIONEERs by that virtue, sat for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia SPM in 2004 with the number of candidates 84.

Students hail from various parts of the nation with a diversity of ethnics, dominantly Malay followed by Chinese, Indian and others.

The first principal was Tn. Hj. Mohd Idrus bin Abdul Hamid, who officially took up the position on the same day ASiS was inaugurated. He was assisted by the Vice Principals; Razmi Abdul Razak (Academics), Ahmad Shafrin Abdul Aziz (Student Affairs), and Rijaluddin Che Mat (Co-curriculum). The administration board remained unchanged until 2011, when Principal Mohd Idrus finally retired after eight years galvanising the school.

13 teachers entered ASiS on the first day. Some of them, including then Principal Mohd Idrus, had been on the grounds long before the existence of ASiS, as the workforce of Sekolah Alam Shah. On 12 September 2003, 12 more teachers entered ASiS.

The school has expanded much since its inception. In the year 2009, the total number of ASiS teachers was 51, with 22 staffs. The number of students reach around 600 per school year. Throughout the years, ASiS has carved itself with numerous achievements that ASiS is not only known nationwide, but also worldwide.

Houses

ASiS students are divided into 4 houses. Their placement in the hostel are made accordingly to their respective houses. It is a tradition for the students to acquire the spirits of their respective houses and compete to uphold their houses in academics, co-curriculum, sports and others. The houses compete for the coveted House Of The Year award during the annual Nostalgia Abadi Dinner (an equivalent to the graduation day/dinner to most schools).

Academic performance

ASiS is well known among the education community for its academics performance, which is considered par excellence. ASiS sits in its own class for being ranked in the top five SBPs in SPM examinations since 2004. Nationwide, ASiS places itself in the top ten schools, beating many other well-known schools, most of them many years older than ASiS[5]. In Kuala Lumpur, ASiS keeps its stand as the best performing school above not only ordinary schools, but also several SBPs located in the state[6].

SPM Year SBP Ranking Batch Name
2004 24 PIONEERS
2005 4 KL RHYNOS
2006 3 ASSASINS
2007 3 R[IV]OLUSIS
2008 3 REFORMASI[V]
2009 5 SA[VI]OUR
2010 6 PATRIOTS-VII
2011 INFINATE-VIII

For several subjects, ASiS remains as one of the top five schools nationwide. Mathematics, for instance, was scored A1 by all SPM candidates in 2008. The GP was 1.00, thus making ASiS the number one school in Malaysia for the subject. The same goes for History; ASiS has topped the list among SBPs for several times.

Co-curriculum

ASiS is not left far behind when it comes to co-curriculum aspect. It is acknowledged that to nurture all-rounded students, it is ostensibly not adequate enough for the students to merely excel academically. The students are exposed and encouraged to participate in various competitions, ranging from school-level tournaments to honourable international-level events. This method has been proven to be effective indubitably. Currently, a portion of the Pudu zone's representatives for the higher levels comes from ASiS. In 2009, ASiS sent the most students on behalf of the Pudu zone to the state level in the Majlis Tilawah Quran, MTQ. The Dikir Barat team also maintains itself as the best Dikir Barat performers not only among the schools in Pudu, but also one of the best in Kuala Lumpur. Sports is also inclusive. ASiS' athletes participate actively in rugby, football, and various track and field events, and have even reached the state and national levels for several times.

In the year 2007, the English Debate team paved its way to the final of the Prime Minister's Cup Debate Competition held at Putrajaya International Convention Center. ASiS successfully emerged and attained its glory as the winners, indicating the end of the five-year streak domination by Tunku Kurshiah College, after a stiff competition against the team from Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman. It was the first time ASiS reached the final leg of the most prestigious competition held for SBPs.

A year later, the English debate team once again glorified the school when the debaters won the National Independence Debate Competition held by the Radio Televisyen Malaysia and Yayasan Pendidikan Cheras[7]. The debate team acted as the Government, against the Johor's representing school, SMK Dato' Jaafar. The competition was aired on TV1. ASiS was represented by English teacher Mr. Allen @ Mohd. Afiq Jeyarajasingam along with students Farid Nazrin Ahmad and Hafiz Tarmizi Musa.

In 2011, ASiS qualified into the Grand Finals of the 9th National English debate competition. It was the first time ASiS had made past a quarterfinals stage in any university debate. The second speaker, Kudrat Lokman was named as the best speaker along the course except during the Grand Finals, where the team conceded a slight defeat to become the runners up [8].

ASiS is also renowned for its active participation in competitions and programs held by either the ministry or Non-Governmental Organisations. Among NGOs affiliated are Yayasan Pendidikan Cheras and International Youth Center(IYC), Kuala Lumpur. In the year 2008, under the surveillance from the IYC, a number of students participated in The Duke of Edinburgh's Award—the international award for youths. Participants from ASiS made up the largest portion among the winners of the award. Also with the endorsement from IYC, ASiS had sent its students for the Ekiden Run for two years consecutively. In the year 2008, ASiS reserved the second runner-up place in the Ekiden run held at Putrajaya, though it was also participated by old-timers, local and overseas.

Others

High Performance School

On 17 February 2011, in an announcement made by Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, ASiS is conferred the status High Performance School, or Sekolah Berprestasi Tinggi (SBT) together with another 22 excellent schools. Along with that, the school recognised debating as its niche area. SBTs form the cluster of high-performing schools with brilliant track records, dubbed as the 'elite' class of Malaysian public schools. This batch of SBTs is an addition to the 20 schools elevated to such title earlier in 2010.[9]

Internationalisation programme

Since its establishment, ASiS has been active in branding the school, not only nationwide but also to the international level. Then Principal Mohd Idrus realised a need for the school to distinct itself from the older and more known Sekolah Alam Shah. For that purpose, the Internationalisation Programme was initiated. This programme, the school's main annual agenda, is also meant to expose the students to the world, especially in the fields of academic, thus enhancing their qualities to be the world class students. For the kickstart, the school made relationships with the neighbouring countries. In 2007, a delegation from ASiS comprising the administrators and prefects flew to Jakarta, Indonesia and visited a few education institutions, particularly schools and universities.

Until now, ASiS has visited a few countries under this programme. Amongst the countries visited are Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Australia and United Kingdom. Through this extensive programme, ASiS bonds ties with foreign education institutions. For instance, in the year 2007, ASiS signed an MoU with the Mahidol Wittayanusorn School (MWITS), an elite school under the special patronage of Thai government for the intellects. ASiS is the first Malaysian school to have a bond with MWITS.

In 2010, ASiS visited Lombok, Indonesia[10]. The students also went for humanitarian mission to Cambodia and Vietnam. The highlight of the year was when ASiS visited London, United Kingdom, and the students and teachers were given a chance to visit Oxford University and had an audience with the prestigious university's students. The school also participated in the International Students Science Fair in Adelaide, Australia and Rits Super Science Fair 2010 at Kyoto, Japan and being the only representative from Malaysia.

The school's Internationalisation programme remained robust in 2011, by which the school visited Beijing, China, Jakarta, Lombok and Sumbawa in Indonesia, Bangkok, Thailand, and attended the ISSF 2011, held at MWITS.
